Learn to sew with us

This course is an ideal follow on from the Beginners Machine Sewing Class. Over 3 weeks you will learn how to read and understand commercial patterns and the techniques used for making your own clothes, whilst making a pair of long legged pyjama bottoms (pattern included in cost). 

You will learn:

• How to read a commercial pattern
• How to measure yourself
• How to insert an elasticated waistband
• How to hem trouser legs
• How to make a buttonhole

What's included?

• A commercial printed pattern with various nightwear designs which you can take home and re-use

What you'll need to bring

• 2.5m cotton fabric to make your project from. We suggest using a cotton lawn, seersucker, poplin or flannel
• 1m of 1/2" (12mm) wide elastic
• Matching thread. We recommend using a good quality brand such as Gütermann or Coats
• A sewing machine (if you don't have one you can choose to hire one from us for £10)
• A sewing kit including scissors or rotary cutter, a quick unpick, pins, tailors chalk or fabric pen, tape measure or ruler, spare needles for your sewing machine. Kit is available to borrow if you don't have your own.

Classes run for 3 weeks, on Wed 4th, 11th and 18th September 2024, from 6.30 - 8.45pm at Saint Wilfrids Community Centre, Coltsgate Hill, Ripon HG4 2AB.

If you are new to sewing or have a machine but don't know how to use it, and fancy meeting some like minded people, this is the course for you! 

Get to know your sewing machine and learn some basic sewing techniques through a couple of small projects that you can take home. This is a day class.

You will learn:

• How to thread and set up your machine
• What the various functions are on your machine
• How to insert a zip
• How to join pieces from a simple sewing pattern

What you need to bring:

• 1 meter cotton fabric to make your projects from or 1/2 meter of two different fabrics to make contrasting linings
• Matching thread with which to sew your project
• A sewing kit including scissors or rotary cutter, a quick unpick, pins, tailors chalk or fabric pen, tape measure or ruler, spare needles for your sewing machine. Kit is available to borrow if you don't have your own.
• A sewing machine (if you don't have one you can choose to hire one from us for £10, please email to request one)
• A packed lunch

Classes run for 3 weeks, on Tuesday 5th, 12th and 19th November, from 6.30 - 8.45pm at Saint Wilfrids Community Centre, Coltsgate Hill, Ripon HG4 2AB.

The Sam Apron is the perfect everyday apron for cooking and crafts from indie pattern company Helen's Closet. This pattern includes chest sizes 31-60" and heights from less than 5’ tall to over 6’ tall! No more “one size fits all” aprons that don’t fit properly. Sew one for yourself or for a loved one and make them something they will wear and love for years. This pattern is endlessly customisable and an ideal sewing project for advanced beginners. The pattern will be printed out for you on A0 paper for you to keep.

You will learn:

• How to read a commercial pattern
• How to measure yourself
• How to sew an in seam pocket
• How to hem a garment 
• How to create a facing
• How to create patch pockets

What you'll need to bring

• 2m cotton fabric to make your project from. Medium to heavy-weight woven fabrics with no stretch. Denim, linen, cotton twill, quilting cotton and canvas are all suitable options. Waxed Canvas can also be used for a water-resistant apron.

£100 for 3 weeks. This course is aimed at confident beginners

Classes run for 3 weeks, on Thursday 21st and 28th November and 5th December, from 6.30 - 9pm at Saint Wilfrids Community Centre, Coltsgate Hill, Ripon HG4 2AB.

Enjoy getting into the festive spirit whilst taking some much needed time to slow down in this 3 week class. 

December can be very hectic and consequently tough on mental health with busy schedules and pressure to keep up the pace. Take a step back and make some time for yourself and join us in the 3 week course where you'll slowly piece together fabric scraps, eventually transforming them into a festive stocking. 

You will learn:

• How to patchwork fabric together and create you own unique design

Classes run for 3 weeks, on Tuesday 26th November, 3rd and 10th December from 6.30 - 8.45pm at Saint Wilfrids Community Centre, Coltsgate Hill, Ripon HG4 2AB.

Join us for a festive workshop and learn how to make these beautiful Scandinavian Star decorations!

During this session, you will select the fabric of your choice and learn traditional origami style folding techniques to create up to 3 stars which can be hung separately on your tree or made into a stunning garland. 

Hot drinks are included, but feel free to BYOB, and we also provide delicious mince pies!

What you'll need to bring

• If you have a sewing kit including sewing scissors or rotary cutter, tailors chalk or fabric pen, tape measure or ruler, please bring it along, however kit is available to borrow on the day.
• Hot drinks are included but if you'd like to bring a drink of your choice, you are very welcome 
• We provide a selection of fabric but if you have something special at home that you'd like to use, please bring it along.
